Located in the southern Caribbean Sea, Aruba is a member state of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is located around 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the northwest of Curaçao and 29 kilometres (18 miles) north of the Venezuelan peninsula of Paraguaná. It is 10 kilometres (6 miles) wide at its widest point and 32 kilometres (20 miles) long from its northwest to its southeast end. White sand beaches with gentle ocean currents can be found on Aruba's western and southern coasts. Most tourist development has taken place here, where the majority of the population resides. Without this protection, the northern and eastern shores are far more pounded by the water and have mostly escaped damage. Aruba has a tropical environment with year-round average temperatures of 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 32 degrees Celsius). Rainfall on the island totals 51 centimetres (20 in) on average per year, with the majority of that falling from October to December. Dutch is the official language of Aruba, however, the Creole language Papiamento, a combination of Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and English, is also commonly used. Additionally, English is extensively spoken, particularly in tourist areas.
